Debating

In class we have been doing debates me, Erana and Joel were all in a group we did our debate first sadly we lost to Maia, Lily and Tyler.

Here is our script

Joel
Speaker 1:
Hello, my name is Joel and I’m here with Erana and James. Our topic is about how school starts too early, I am the first speaker and I will talk about how people don’t have enough time to rest and have to wake up at un healthy hours of the day so they can get to school on time. Every day people come to school weary and tired because they have gotten up early, so they can get ready for school, then they come to school all tired.

So you may be wondering why don’t they go to bed earlier well that may be because, they are be, behind on homework or they are just really stubborn and refuse to go to bed. Either way students are waking up way too early and not getting work done or not as well as they can. Getting them in trouble for not finishing work. This would especially happen in high school when they’ve got a lot more homework, so they would stay up late trying to finish it.

There have been some research into how late students are having to wake up and these are some results

In one article over 39000 students in the u.s said that they were waking up at 5.30 am to get to school by 8.00 am and scientist found  that a teen’s need a minimum of 9.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep to be Energetic and ready for the day. These kids were up till around 10.30 pm doing homework that's around 7 hours of sleep.

Now are second speaker erana will say some words of wisdom.

Summary: Just pointing out your first speaker said that there would be no holidays but if the school days started later it means the school day would finish later so the holidays wouldn't be taken away. In conclusion school starts too early it causes a lack of sleep. Lack of sleep affects brain activity and activeness this cause students to struggle with school work and homework.

Erana
Speaker 2:

  • Studies show that sleep deprivation has a significant effect of mood
  • University of Pennsylvania researchers found that subjects who were limited to only 4.5 hours of sleep a night for one week reported feeling more stressed, angry, sad, and mentally exhausted
  • Not only does sleep affect mood but bad mood’s can also affect sleep
  • Sometimes if you don’t get enough sleep you can get angry at little things and could have an outburst where you may break things or damage things and hurt people or their feelings which could end in getting suspended or expelled

Hi I’m Erana i am the second speaker and today I will be talking about mood swings and how your mood swings can get out of hand if you don’t get enough sleep. There have been studies that show sleep deprivation has a significant effect on moods .the University of Pennsylvania researchers have found that people who were limited to 4.5 hours of sleep a night for one week said they were feeling more stressed, angry, sad and mentally exhausted due to not having enough sleep. As you know sleep can affect your mood but your mood can also affect your sleep.

A Lot of people when they don’t get enough sleep they've gotten angry at little things and can have an outburst which could end in stuff being broken and people getting physically and mentally hurt which if at school could mean you get suspended or expelled so with school starting later you could prevent bullying and angry outbursts because those things are mostly caused by not getting enough sleep.if we start school later that means people would have enough energy to start the day off good and end the day off good.with more sleep in the image less negative mood swings and more positive mood swings. Worrying about how tired your gonna be tomorrow which ironically wouldnt be the case if you would stop worrying.

Thank you very much for listen, now over to James our 3rd speaker.

James
Speaker 3:

Importance of Sleep
  • People are tired at school
  • Teenagers need more sleep
  • Sleep is important
  • Why school should start later

Hi my name is James, and today I will be talking about the importance of sleep and how it’s been proven that teenagers should have more sleep. A number of times I have seen in my classes over the 2 years of intermediate people who have come to school tired and have even sometimes been told off by the teacher because they haven’t got there work done or up to the standard it should be done too.

Experts have proved in recent studies that teenagers should get more sleep, teenagers get about 7 - 7 ¼ hours of sleep when teenagers should actually be getting between 9 - 9 ¼ hours of sleep that is for mostly 13 - 18 year olds and most people in year 8 are 12 turning 13. Sleep is very important so it is essential that everyone especially teenagers get the preferred amount of sleep.

I’m sure I talk for everyone when I say no one likes getting up in the early morning for school even earlier if you have a sports practice or you are part of the school orchestra or anything else that is early in the morning.

Now most of you will be thinking why don’t people just go to sleep earlier, well a lot of people don’t like to go to sleep earlier because they are either not tired or they want to watch something on T.V and before you say they can just record it well a lot of people don’t have sky and other T.V companies that allow you to record stuff.

So in conclusion sleep is very important and it’s essential that teenagers get enough sleep and that it’s better if school starts later then if you go to bed earlier because everyone will just be happier.

Thank You

Inquiry and Tech

My inquiry group consist of 3 people me, Teina and Jackson. We are doing our inquiry about The Supermoon we have done heaps of research and are now going to make an imovie about or findings.

In Tech yesterday we learnt about UV light and we made bracelets using UV beads so when there is UV in the sun the beads light up. All the beads are different colours and change those colours when there is UV in the sun.

Technology

For Technology I am doing Science with Ms Hawtin on Tuesday since some people were at Cape Sacuntrey so instead of doing book work we made some posters about inventions that will change the world and keep people warm healthy and fix some of the world's problems. Ms Hawtin told us of a great invention that they are using in refugee camps in Europe. Some people from a university came up with a way to light up the camp at night so if they need to get to the toilet blocks at night that could be quite a way away. The people from the University made these little light battery kind of things that they put at the bottom of the toilets they then put lights in the toilet and around the toilet block and around the camps these lights are powered by the little battery things at the bottom of the toilets they are powered by the human urine (pee) now the some of the camps light up making it easier for the refugees to see at night. After Ms Hawtin told us that we then searched up some inventions that we thought were good inventions. My one was a solar powered tent, it provides light at night, WiFi, you can charge your devices in it and you can even heat the floor, Great for party's all year round.

Passion Project and Pay It Forward Project

In class we are doing passion projects which is a project on whatever you want. Me, Jackson, Teina and Brenna are doing a project on the Bermuda Triangle. We are doing lots of research on it and we will bring all of our findings together and make an iMovie.

I class we have also been doing Pay It Forward Projects Me, Hannah, Jackson and Brianna are working together to fundraise money for Limitless Hope we have decided to put a lollie jar in the library and people pay 1 dollar to guess how many lollies are inside who wins gets to keep the lollies and there is a special surprise inside which the also get to keep!!!!!!

Electronics

On Tuesday morning we started our construction of our LED Emergency Lights.
I got up to soldering my LED lights onto my piece of corflute.
What I found most challenging was drilling the holes in your piece of corflute where the were going to go it was challenging because you had to get in the right place not close to the edge or your pictures you had to get the right amount of holes as well then after you had finished you had to turn it around and see if some of the drill holes haven't drilled straight through the corflute if you had any of those you had to drill exactly where the hole is.

Today in electronics I got as far as putting resistors onto my piece of corflute.
What I found most challenging was putting the extra wires on to the LED light it was hard because sometimes it would not stick and took you for ages to do it but once you got the hang of it it became more and more easy.

Maths and Inquiry

In maths we are learning about BEDMAS and what each letter means to work out problems easier.

B - Brackets

E - Exponents

D - Division

M - Multiplication

A - Addition

S - Subtraction

They are in this order because some equations are quite complicated so they make it easier by putting it in this order.

In Inquiry we are doing Pay it Forward projects in my group are... Me, Jackson, Hannah and Brianna.
We are doing our project on Limitless Hope which is a company out in Napier who help the homeless people by giving them food, warm clothes and blankets and shelter. We have decided to fundraise money for them because they need more money to help the homeless people on the streets of Napier and Hastings.

Also in Inquiry we are doing passion projects Me, Jackson, Teina and Brenna have teamed up and we have decided to do a project on The Bermuda Triangle. We have done a lot of research on it and we are going to make an iMovie about our findings!!!!

Technology

Today n Technology we have been doing stuff with wires. Here is a photo of mine. First, you have to cut two pieces of wire then you tin it with something soldering iron then once you have tined it you trim then you get a square piece of plastic then you get a strip of copper tape then you put two blobs with the soldering iron and then you stick on the wires in any way you want to.

Maths and Inquiry

This week is the first week of Term 3 we are half way through the school year and it's weird to think that next term will be the last term of year 7. This week in maths we learned about the Mode, Median, Mean and Range so we have been doing some work on those 4 things. This term in maths we are also learning about Graphs and learning about new graphs and how to use graphs to help us work out problems.

This term in Inquiry we are learning about change makers so people who have changed the world like....... Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, Sir Edmund Hillary, Rosa Parks and more. We are also going to be helping the community, my group..... Me, Hannah, Brianna and Jackson ae going to hold a bake sale to fundraise to buy stuff for children and people in the hospital some of the money we fundraise may go to a charity like the SPCA, The Salvation Army and more. I have decided to do a project on Malala Yousafzai as extra work in Inquiry I am reading her book: I am Malala: The girl who stood up for education and was by the Taliban. I have decided to do a project on her because she changed the world, was the voice of so many that didn't and gave HOPE to people who felt hopeless that no matter what they do nothing would change. Malala Yousfzai won a Nobel Peace Prize along with a lot of other prizes as well. Malala Yousafzai Inspired me by her words on her sixteenth birthday 12th July 2012 when she spoke at the UN ( United Nations ) her words were.......

ONE CHILD, ONE TEACHER, ONE BOOK AND ONE PEN CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, EDUCATION IS THE ONLY SOLUTION.

Tech

In Tech, we have to design a logo for either a Flower, Ice Cream or a Surf Shop. We have to complete two sheets for what our design is going to be, what our shop is going to be called, where the name is going to be, what font we're going to use, and if we want to what our phone number is going to be. I am doing an Ice Cream Shop and my shop name is "WINTERS BREEZE." I am finally onto my FINAL sheet where you actually put the logo on the van so this afternoon I will be working on my Final design.

Matariki

This week for homework we have 2 weeks to build a kite that has a Matariki deign on it. This week is Matariki so instead of assembly, we will fly our kite in the tremendous playground on this Friday afternoon. In class, we have been learning all about Matariki. We read some stories in the class of different beliefs, myths and legends of the 7 stars of Matariki. There are a lot of different kite designs that look great on this Friday.

Here is a picture of the seven stars of Matariki.

Technology & Design

In Technology, we are designing a shop either; A Flower Shop, Ice Cream Shop or a Surf Shop. We have to plan what our name will be and what our logo will look like we did some planning so we had to search up logos on vans and had to write if they were the colours were good, you could tell what they were straight away and if they name of the company was clear.

Inquiry and Tech

This week we have been focusing on our inquiry. We have to do sixteen things by the end of the term. I'm in a group with Marina and Jackson and we have been doing one about emotions we had to take some pictures of different emotions (Happy, Sad, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Suprised.) Some of the activities are part of our homework as well so we're practically doing the inquiry for Homework. This term we have changed Tech groups, last week was our first Tech class I'm in Hard Tech with Mr. Sutherland and my partner is Henry. In our first lesson, we were drawing different lines and how to make it look like its popping out. Its really fun and Mr. Sutherland is really nice and a great Tech teacher.
